Welcome
Welcome to the School Turnaround Foundation
The School Turnaround Foundation exists to combat the math challenges in South Africa by equipping teachers with the skills they need to teach effectively. Through quality professional development and a skills-mastery methodology focused on the conceptual understanding of mathematics, we empower educators to transform math education.
The Challenges Facing South Africa
In the Western Cape, 26% of bachelor passes (university eligible) come from non-fee-paying schools, Ranking last in South Africa.
Of the 1,153 846 learners that began school in grade 1 (2011), 14% of matriculants passed mathematics in 2023.
The Western Cape ranks second last in participation rate in South Africa, with only 25% of students enrolled in mathematics.
Our Mathematics Turnaround Strategy

We guide teachers to progress students from working with concrete objects to pictures, and then to symbols.
We the bring fun back into teaching mathematics through interactive resources and creative activities.

Conceptual Understanding in Mathematics
At STF, we are dedicated to training your teachers in conceptual math instruction, equipping your students with the tools to succeed academically and beyond. We invite your leadership to see the transformative impact on your educators and learners.
The following video explores whether 2x4 is the same as 4x2, illustrating multiplication as a process of grouping rather than simply finding an answer.
The essence of mathematics is not to make simple things complicated, but to make complicated things simple.
